Electric scooter and e-bike locks: the 2026 anti-theft guide

Approved U-lock, anchor point, two locks, what theft insurers require: how to protect a 1 000, 3 000 or 5 000 € machine.

Alarm disc lock with reminder cable, keys and pouch

A high-performance scooter or an e-bike means 1 000 to 8 000 € sleeping outside if you don’t get organised. Here is the method we recommend at the counter, from tight budgets to high-end machines.

The 10% rule (and why it exists)

Recommended lock budget: about 10% of the machine’s price. A 15 € cable lock can be cut in a few seconds; an approved U-lock holds out for several minutes — enough to deter the vast majority of opportunistic thefts.

The 4 habits that change everything

  • An approved U-lock (SRA certification or FUB two-wheeler rating) through the frame AND a fixed point.
  • The right anchor point : a cemented-in rack, not a wire fence or a post that can be lifted out.
  • Two locks on expensive machines: U-lock + chain or U-lock + disc lock — two different tools = twice as much time for the thief.
  • At home too : most thefts happen in cellars and entrance halls. A wall anchor or a U-lock, even in the garage.

What your theft insurance will require

Theft cover almost always requires: an approved lock (keep the lock’s invoice!), theft with break-in or with the machine locked up, the invoice and serial number of the vehicle, sometimes a locked room at night. Without this proof, no compensation — we can reissue your invoice at the shop if needed.

Trackers: useful, not enough

A tracker (such as a hidden AirTag) helps you find the machine, but never replaces steel. Combine them: a strong lock + a discreet tracker + a photo of the serial number on your phone.
