Electric scooter helmet in France: compulsory or not in 2026?
Helmet, vest, lights, horn: what the 2026 law really requires on an electric scooter, and what is simply common sense.

It’s THE question we’re asked every week in the shop. Short answer: in town, a helmet is not compulsory in 2026 on an e-scooter limited to 25 km/h — but it is strongly recommended, and a general obligation is still under discussion. Full answer below.
What the law actually requires
- Outside built-up areas (on roads where scooters are allowed): helmet compulsory.
- At night, or when visibility is poor : a high-visibility vest or retro-reflective gear compulsory.
- On the vehicle : front and rear position lights, reflectors, brakes and a horn — compulsory at all times.
- In built-up areas : helmet recommended (not yet compulsory for over-12s on an e-scooter).
A special case: the 45 km/h speed pedelec (Stromer) is a moped — approved helmet compulsory in all circumstances. Details in our speed pedelec guide.
Why we wear one anyway (the workshop’s view)
At 25 km/h, a head-first fall is no more forgiving than on a bike. We see machines come into the workshop after accidents — a helmet is the accessory with the best protection-to-price ratio there is. A good urban helmet is chosen to fit your head size, with built-in lighting if you ride in the evening.
The complete equipment checklist
Fitted helmet · reflective vest in your bag (compulsory at night) · lights checked before every winter ride · working bell · a serious lock (see our upcoming anti-theft guide). The workshop checks lights and brakes at every service (35–50 €).
