Electric scooter insurance in France: the 2026 guide

Compulsory third-party cover, theft cover, documents to provide, derestriction: what you need to know to insure your electric scooter in 2026.

Yes, insurance is compulsory to ride an electric scooter in France: at the very least “vehicle” third-party liability (your home insurance usually isn’t enough). Here’s how to be covered without spending hours on it — and without paying for cover you don’t need.

What the law says

An electric scooter is an EDPM (the French category for motorised personal transporters): like any motor vehicle, it must be covered by specific third-party liability insurance, which pays for damage caused to others. Riding without insurance is a criminal offence — the fine can reach several thousand euros. The full reminder of the 2026 rules (25 km/h, age, equipment) is in our 2026 scooter law guide.

Third-party only or comprehensive?

  • Third-party only — the legal minimum, a few euros a month. Covers other people, not your machine.
  • Third-party + damage/theft — worth it once the machine costs more than ~800-1 000 €: theft (with lock and storage conditions), damage, sometimes assistance. Expect a higher monthly budget, to be weighed against the price of the machine.

On a Nami or a Dualtron costing several thousand euros, theft cover deserves serious thought — and the insurer will often require an approved lock and an invoice.

The documents the insurer will ask for

  • The purchase invoice (keep it — we can reissue it if needed)
  • The serial number of the machine
  • A compliant machine: limited to 25 km/h — a derestricted scooter can lead to a refusal to pay out

Good to know: at Vélo Shop, every scooter leaves set up in line with the regulations, with its detailed invoice — exactly what you need to take out a policy.

In case of an accident or a police check

Keep the insurance certificate on you (or a photo of it). After an accident, fill in an accident report as you would with a car; after a theft, file a police report and give the serial number. And if the machine is damaged, the workshop draws up a repair quote you can use for the insurance claim.
