A well-maintained electric scooter can last twice as long as a neglected one. Yet maintenance is often the forgotten part of owning an electric scooter: you ride every day, you charge it, and you only deal with the rest when a problem appears. That’s a shame, because a few simple habits, done regularly, are enough to preserve your machine’s battery, tires, brakes and electronics. Here are the 7 essential habits we recommend in the workshop, whether you ride a light urban model or a high-end scooter.

1. Check the tire pressure every week

It’s the simplest and most worthwhile habit in all of electric scooter maintenance. Under-inflated tires increase battery consumption, reduce range, worsen road holding and greatly increase the risk of pinch punctures.

Get into the habit of checking the pressure once a week with a gauge, and stick to the range shown on the tire sidewall. The ideal pressure depends on your weight and how you ride: lower for comfort, higher for efficiency. If in doubt, ask for advice when you visit the workshop.

2. Look after the battery, the heart of the scooter

The battery accounts for a large part of your scooter’s value. A few simple rules significantly extend its life:

Avoid leaving it discharged for too long: a battery stored flat for weeks can deteriorate irreversibly. For long-term storage (over winter, for example), leave it charged between 40 and 70%, in a dry, temperate place. Always use the original charger or one approved by the manufacturer, and avoid charging straight after a long ride: let the battery cool down for a few minutes.

Heat and cold: the two enemies

Don’t leave your scooter in full sun in summer or outside in freezing weather. Extreme temperatures speed up cell ageing and reduce real-world range.

3. Check the brakes regularly

On an electric scooter, braking is your first line of safety. Every month, check pad wear, the condition of the discs and lever travel. A lever that comes too close to the handlebar, a metallic noise or juddering brakes are signs that an adjustment or a replacement is needed.

Hydraulic brakes also need bleeding from time to time. It’s a technical job we do routinely: don’t wait for the brakes to feel spongy before having it done.

4. Re-tighten the bolts, stem and axles

Road vibrations gradually loosen the hardware. Once a month, go round the scooter: stem, handlebar, folding mechanism, wheel axles, mudguards. Any play in the steering column or the folding mechanism must be corrected immediately, because it gets worse quickly and can become dangerous.

Use the right tools and tighten without forcing: overtightening can damage threads, especially on aluminium parts.

5. Clean it, but never with a pressure washer

A clean scooter is also a scooter you inspect: while cleaning it, you’ll spot a crack, a damaged cable or a worn tire. Use a damp cloth or a lightly soapy sponge, then dry it.

On the other hand, ban pressure washers and buckets of water: even on models advertised as splash-resistant, pressurised water gets into the connectors, the controller and the bearings. It’s one of the leading causes of electrical failure we see in the workshop.

6. Store the scooter under cover

Humidity is the silent enemy of electronics. Store your scooter in a dry place, out of the rain and away from big temperature swings. If you’ve ridden it in the rain, wipe it down and let it dry before putting it away or charging it.

For long periods without use, checking the tire pressure and partially recharging the battery every 4 to 6 weeks is enough to keep it in shape.

7. Have a full service once a year

Like a bike or a car, an electric scooter deserves an annual service by a professional: torque check of the fasteners, bearing condition, battery and controller diagnostics, brake adjustment, tire and lighting check. If you ride every day, a service every six months is even better.

Our workshop services all the brands we sell, from urban models to the most powerful machines such as Dualtron. You can also contact us to book an appointment or ask a technical question.

Regulation reminder: 25 km/h on public roads

In France, electric scooters are limited to 25 km/h on public roads. Models capable of going faster must be limited to ride on the road and can only show their full potential on private land. Careful maintenance doesn’t change this rule: it applies to all scooters, whatever their power.

FAQ: electric scooter maintenance

How often should you service your electric scooter?

A quick check every week (tire pressure, general condition), a more thorough check every month (brakes, fasteners, tire wear) and an annual workshop service make a good rhythm for daily use.

Can I wash my scooter with water?

A damp cloth or a sponge is enough. Absolutely avoid hoses and pressure washers, which can damage the electronics and bearings, even on splash-resistant models.

How should I store the battery over winter?

Charge it to between 40 and 70%, store the scooter in a dry, temperate place, and top up the charge every 4 to 6 weeks. Never leave it completely discharged for several weeks.

In short

There’s nothing complicated about maintaining an electric scooter: pressure in the tires, a well-treated battery, brakes kept an eye on, checked fasteners, gentle cleaning, dry storage and an annual service. These 7 habits protect your safety, your range and the value of your machine. And if you’re looking for your next ride, discover our selection of electric scooters in our Obernai shop: we’ll recommend the model that suits your use, and look after its maintenance over the long term.
