Speed: 25 km/h, and no more

On public roads, the scooter must be speed-limited by design to 25 km/h. Faster models exist (and are legal), but are reserved for private use. Riding a device exceeding 25 km/h on the road carries a fine of up to €1,500.

Minimum age: 14 years old

You must be at least 14 years old to ride a scooter on public roads. Carrying a passenger is forbidden.

Insurance: mandatory

Like any motorized vehicle, the scooter must be covered by civil liability insurance. Riding without insurance is heavily penalized. Expect 5 to 15 €/month for a dedicated plan.

Mandatory equipment

Front and rear lights, brakes, horn, and reflective devices. At night or in low visibility, retroreflective equipment is mandatory. A helmet is highly recommended in urban areas (a general obligation has been under discussion since 2025).

Where to ride — and derestriction

Cycle paths and lanes first; otherwise the roadway (≤ 50 km/h in town). Sidewalk forbidden unless by municipal decree (scooter held by hand). Derestriction is forbidden on public roads: fine, and above all, insurance may refuse any coverage.
