Three models come up again and again in the questions we’re asked in our Obernai shop: the Thunder, the Storm and the Victor. They look alike on paper, but they’re aimed at completely different uses. This guide helps you choose according to your build, your journeys and the space you have to store it.

First of all: the 25 km/h limit on public roads

This is the starting point, and it isn’t negotiable. In France, an electric scooter ridden on public roads is a motorised personal transporter (EDPM) and its speed is limited to 25 km/h. Dualtron models all far exceed this limit: they are sold for use on private land or closed circuits, or limited to 25 km/h for use on the road.

In practice, this means that a Dualtron’s advertised power will never translate into a legal top speed on a cycle lane. On the other hand, it changes everything else: the ability to climb a hill without flagging, the pick-up from a standstill, comfort under heavy load. That’s what you’re buying with these machines, not a speed figure.

The other rules to know: riding is forbidden for under-14s, one person per vehicle, third-party liability insurance compulsory, helmet strongly recommended (and compulsory outside built-up areas). We cover all of this in detail in our article on the regulations.

Dualtron Thunder: the all-rounder that made the brand’s reputation

The Thunder is the model that established Dualtron with the general public. It’s a dual-motor scooter with big 11-inch wheels, adjustable spring suspension and a wide deck. Its balance is its main strength: it’s powerful enough never to feel strained, without reaching the weight and bulk of the most extreme models.

Who is it for?

For someone who wants a solid machine, comfortable on poor surfaces, able to carry an adult of average or heavy build without struggling on climbs. If you’re unsure and have no particular requirements, it’s often the right compromise.

The limits

It’s still heavy — count on several tens of kilos. Carrying it up two floors every day isn’t realistic. Also check the space available in your boot: folded, it’s very long.

Dualtron Storm: more torque, more battery

The Storm moves up a notch. A more generous battery, beefier motors, a reinforced frame: it’s the version for those who find the Thunder just enough. On long rides and hilly routes — and Alsace has plenty as soon as you leave the plain — the difference in real-world range is clear.

Who is it for?

A heavy rider, rough terrain, long journeys, or wanting a comfortable margin so you never ride on a flat battery. The Storm is also the choice of those who keep their machine for several years: a battery that’s pushed to its limits less often ages better.

The limits

The weight goes up again, and so does the price. If your journeys are 8 km there and back on the flat, you’re paying for a reserve you’ll never use.

Dualtron Victor: the compact format in the range

The Victor tackles the problem the other way round. Instead of chasing maximum power, it aims for reduced bulk and weight compared with its big sisters, while keeping the Dualtron DNA: serious construction, suspension, disc brakes.

Who is it for?

Daily urban journeys, a flat with no bike storage, combining train + scooter, a small car’s boot. It’s the model we recommend when the main constraint isn’t performance but having to carry and store the vehicle several times a day.

The limits

Smaller wheels and less generous suspension: on a broken-up path, it filters less well than the Thunder or the Storm. And on steep slopes with a heavy rider, it has to work harder.

The decision table, one sentence each

Victor — I have to carry it, store it, take it on a train: I put the format first.

Thunder — I want a versatile, comfortable machine without going to extremes: the default choice.

Storm — I’m heavy, my terrain climbs, my rides are long: I take the margin.

All three models and their variants can be seen in our Dualtron collection. If you’d like to compare with other brands in the premium segment, also take a look at Langfeite models.

The three criteria we really look at in the shop

1. Your weight and that of your load

This is the most underestimated factor. A 60 kg rider and a 100 kg rider with a bag won’t experience the same scooter. The higher the load, the further the claimed range drifts from the real range, and the more motor torque matters on climbs.

2. The terrain on your journeys

On the flat, almost all the machines in this range are suitable. As soon as there are regular climbs, the gap between models widens quickly.

3. Where it sleeps

A ground-floor garage or a third floor with no lift: the answer completely changes the recommended model. A wonderful scooter you never take out because it’s too heavy to carry downstairs is a bad buy.

Maintenance: what these machines need

A scooter in this category isn’t a toy. Points to check regularly: tire pressure and wear, tightness of the stem and folding plate, brake pads, play in the suspension, and the condition of the wiring at the handlebar. A battery stored at between 40 and 70% charge, away from frost, lasts noticeably longer.

Our workshop in Obernai looks after maintenance and repairs, including on models bought elsewhere.

FAQ

Can you ride a Dualtron on the road in France?

Only if it’s limited to 25 km/h and complies with EDPM regulations. In its original configuration, a Dualtron exceeds this limit and is for use on private land or closed circuits. Find out before buying what you intend to do with it.

What’s the real difference in range between these models?

Manufacturer figures are measured in favourable conditions (light rider, flat ground, moderate speed, mild temperature). In real use, it’s wise to count on noticeably less. The ranking stays the same: the Storm offers the biggest reserve, the Victor the most modest, and the Thunder sits in between.

Should you choose the most powerful one “just in case”?

Rarely. Power comes at a cost in weight, price and bulk — three things that weigh on you every day, whereas the need for maximum power is occasional. Better to start from your real journeys.

Unsure? Come and try them

The best way to decide between a Thunder, a Storm and a Victor is still to get your hands on them. Weight, handlebar width, riding position, deck height: these are sensations no spec sheet can convey. Come and see us in Obernai or contact us, and we’ll guide you according to your build and your journeys, without selling you anything bigger than you need.

Dualtron is one of the best-known brands in the world of high-end electric scooters.
