Short answer: <strong>in town, a helmet is not compulsory in 2026 on an e-scooter limited to 25 km\/h \u2014 but it is strongly recommended<\/strong>, and a general obligation is still under discussion. Full answer below.<\/p>\n<h2>What the law actually requires<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Outside built-up areas<\/strong> (on roads where scooters are allowed): helmet <strong>compulsory<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>At night, or when visibility is poor<\/strong> : a high-visibility vest or retro-reflective gear <strong>compulsory<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>On the vehicle<\/strong> : front and rear position lights, reflectors, brakes and a horn \u2014 compulsory at all times.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>In built-up areas<\/strong> : helmet recommended (not yet compulsory for over-12s on an e-scooter).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A special case: the <strong>45 km\/h speed pedelec<\/strong> (Stromer) is a moped \u2014 approved helmet <strong>compulsory<\/strong> in all circumstances. We see machines come into the workshop after accidents \u2014 a helmet is the accessory with the best protection-to-price ratio there is. A good urban helmet is chosen to fit your head size, with built-in lighting if you ride in the evening.<\/p>\n<h2>The complete equipment checklist<\/h2>\n<p>Fitted helmet \u00b7 reflective vest in your bag (compulsory at night) \u00b7 lights checked before every winter ride \u00b7 working bell \u00b7 a serious lock (see our upcoming anti-theft guide).
