Here is the method we recommend at the counter, from tight budgets to high-end machines.<\/p>\n<h2>The 10% rule (and why it exists)<\/h2>\n<p>Recommended lock budget: <strong>about 10% of the machine&#8217;s price<\/strong>. A 15 \u20ac cable lock can be cut in a few seconds; an <strong>approved U-lock<\/strong> holds out for several minutes \u2014 enough to deter the vast majority of opportunistic thefts.<\/p>\n<h2>The 4 habits that change everything<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>An approved U-lock<\/strong> (SRA certification or FUB two-wheeler rating) through the frame AND a fixed point.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>The right anchor point<\/strong> : a cemented-in rack, not a wire fence or a post that can be lifted out.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Two locks<\/strong> on expensive machines: U-lock + chain or U-lock + disc lock \u2014 two different tools = twice as much time for the thief.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>At home too<\/strong> : most thefts happen in cellars and entrance halls. A wall anchor or a U-lock, even in the garage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What your theft insurance will require<\/h2>\n<p>Theft cover almost always requires: <strong>an approved lock<\/strong> (keep the lock&#8217;s invoice!), theft with break-in or with the machine locked up, <strong>the invoice and serial number<\/strong> of the vehicle, sometimes a locked room at night.
